TCRA Urges To Public to Use Social Networks for Economic Gains

THE Northern Zone office of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) said that it will continue to educate the public on the importance of using social networks to gain social and economic benefits.

The assurance was given on Wednesday, by the Northern Zone Manager of TCRA, Eng Imelda Salum, while giving her presentation during the authority’s education campaign on the best use of the social networks, which was held in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Region.

“Various types of social networks  have many opportunities to make people develop themselves commercially as well as getting any kind of good education that a person wants, a good way of using networks instead of using these networks for evil acts such as crime, defamation or humiliating others”, she said, during the education campaign  that carries the slogan Ascend Digitally.

Eng Salum said that the big difference in using social networks   was that those who use it well end up benefiting economically and educationally while those who misuse the networks get ending up badly by getting various punishments including jail terms.

“That’s why TCRA in collaboration Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) with the police force, embarked on this special campaign so that people can understand how they can use the social networks  well and benefit economically and educationally”, she said.

In his presentation during the educational campaign, Inspector Geofrey Amlima from the police force asked members of the public to make follow ups on the education provided through the campaign by the TCRA so that they could have the better understanding of the good uses social networks so as to avoid unexpected punishments.

Others believe that the use of the social networks  are their basic rights and that they can use them by writing or posting anything; what they don’t know is that there are legal grounds that guide the use of social networks”, he said.

He added, “People with these misconceptions have found themselves in the hands of the law to answer accusations of defaming people or sending information that is basically not allowed; education like this provides an opportunity for everyone to know the correct use of the networks while observing the networks laws of 2015”.

Another police officer Detective Michael Matiko, advised people to ensure that they protect their communication devices such as phones and computers to prevent those (devices) from been misused by people with ill motives.

“If you don’t take good care of your devices, someone with evil intentions will use them to send bad messages without your knowledge and put you in a difficult time, including being brought before the law enforcement organs to answer charges of abuse by using the social networks or posting inappropriate items”, he said.

He also called on people to be sure of the information they receive through various networks before sharing them with others so as to avoid getting into trouble, including being accused of misuse of social networks.
