Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authorities (TAZARA) has announced a temporary suspension of interstate passenger services following a freight train accident that occurred at the Lumumwe-Mpanga section in Tanzania.
A press statement issued on Friday states that the November 30, this year involving a freight train was caused by the failure of a locomotive.
“The section between Lumumwe and Mpanga, where the accident occurred, has been temporarily closed as rescue operations are underway,”
authorities Head of Public Relations Conrad Simuchile says in the statement made available to Vivax Media.
In addition he said that in the meantime, until further notice, passenger services in Tanzania shall only be available between Dar es Salaam and Mlimba, whilst in Zambia the services shall only be available between New Kapiri-Mposhi and Nakonde.
“The Authority is working around the clock to ensure that normal train services are restored as quickly as possible,”
he says.
