Three people have died and 18 others injured in Ilemela District after a truck which was loaded with cement bricks experienced brake failure and hit other vehicles which were at stoplight on Nyerere Road.
According to Mwanza Regional Police Commander Wilboard Mutafungwa the vehicles involved in the accident include Toyota Hiace with registration number T604CJK, Toyota Noah T368, Toyota IST T594 and Toyota Isuzu T419.
He said all the wounded people were taken to different hospitals including Buzuruga Health Centre, Sekou Toure Hospital and Bugando Referral Hospital for treatment.
“The three people died on the spot while 18 others who were injured were taken to the hospitals ,15 of them were discharged after receiving treatment while three others are still hospitalised at Bugando Referral Hospital for further treatment,”the RPC said.
Commander Mutafungwa called upon vehicle owners to conduct regular maintenance of their cars so as to avoid such accidents.
He said that the driver of the truck, which caused the accident, disappeared shortly after the accident and that police were investigating the accident in order to establish the owner of the truck who will help them to arrest the driver.
The Mwanza police boss named the deceased as James Lucas (29) Shabani Mayunga (81) and a man aged 28 years whose name was yet to be established.
An eye witness Shaibu Benjameni called upon traffic police to restrict vehicles which do not undergo maintenance from operating by inspecting their maintenance schedule.
