The Cutting of Carbon Emission: President Samia Parades TZ Resolves

Tanzania is taking a number of initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change for sustainable development, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has said.

She said the government has already put in place the national climate change response strategy and contribution with a target of reducing green gas emission economy wide between 30 to 35 per cent by the year 2030.

President Samia made the statement on Monday in Sharm El Sheikh City, Egypt, while attending 27th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27).

According to her, showing the political will, Tanzania is continuing to construct and expand rapid transport
networks that are expected to reduce more than 900 million tonnes of carbon generated each year.

“We are also determined to increase the use of renewable energies from 6 per cent in 2015 to 8 per cent in the
year 2025,”
she said, adding that the country has also put in place a strategy for planting 200 million trees every three years.

“In this regard, we urge developed countries, especially the G-20 to fulfill their commitments,”
said the president.

Adding;

“We call upon effective implementation of technology transfer, while unlocking climate finances to
fund our national determined contributions”.

President Samia also called for a need for the realignment of the global carbon prices for the sake of generating resources from this carbon sink.

The need for support is due to the fact that most developing countries are lacking technological know-how,
finance capacity as well as limited scientific information.
She was of the view that time has come for developed countries to raise the subsequent determined contribution ambitions for the sake of halting greenhouse emission of concentrated carbon dioxide.

Speaking during the COP26 held in Glasgow Scotland in November last year, President Samia extended a call for developed nations to unlock climate change financing to the low income countries, including Tanzania.

She said, it was a high time for the developing countries to get financial support and technical know-how on
implementable strategies to be applied on the matter.

This is the first climate summit in Africa since 2016.

Many diplomats said they hope it will be an ‘African COP’ in focus as well as location, given that African nations face some of the worst impacts of climate change.

Speaking recently, the Minister of State Vice President’s Office Union and Environment, Selemani Jafo
said the country has a number of agendas such as climate change adaptation, climate change finance, loss and
damage caused by climate change, and global temperature reduction.

“In recognition of the various steps/efforts we have taken in various sectors in the country, the pavilion will feature special works to promote Tanzania,”
he said.

According to Dr Jafo, Tanzania has taken significant steps since the conclusion of COP 26, including
the preparation of a plan to reintroduce climate change resistance issues into the country’s policies, plans,
strategies, and programmes.

The project, which involves mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, began in January 2022 and will be completed in three years’ time.
