Tanzanian Country Plans to Develop its Own Satellite

The country of Tanzania plans to develop its own satellite and the team to work on the logistics has been formed.

Deputy Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Mathew Kundo told the National Assembly on Monday that the government has from this financial year kick start the process to develop and later launch the satellite to space within the near future.

Eng Kundo gave the announcement in response to a question by Kenneth Nollo (Bahi-CCM) on when the government will launch a programme to develop and launch satellite to the space.

“This financial year, we have started initial plans to develop the satellite,”

he said

He added that the government has prepared a paper on how to get the team of experts, needs and expected cost to develop the satellite and submit the report to the decision making organs.

Yesterday, Uganda developed the first ever satellite PearlAfricaSat-1 satellite by Ugandans Edgar Mujuni, Bonny Omara, and Derrick Tebusweke.

The development of the satellite is part of the Joint Global Multi-Nation Birds Satellite Project that began in October 2019 after President Yoweri Museveni directed the development of a National Space Agency and Institute.

This followed Uganda’s agreement with Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) in Japan, and involved up skilling the three graduate engineers to design, build, test, and launch Uganda’s first satellite.

According to engineers, the PearlAfricaSat-1 will help provide research and observation data in six primary areas including weather forecast; land, water and mineral mapping; agriculture monitoring; infrastructure planning; border security, and disaster prevention
