Police officers in Katavi Region have arrested a petty trader Geoffrey Evarist (44), for allegedly impersonating a Tanzania Intelligence and Security Service (TISS) officer and subsequently obtaining 5.1m/- illegally.
It was further emerged that Evarist, who is a resident of Misunkumilo Street in Mpanda Municipality, obtained the money for his own gain from eight parents after assuring them that he would help their children to join Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Force (TPDF) and TISS training camps.
The victims were eight young people whose parents or guardians were caught into the snare of the suspect.
Briefing journalists yesterday in Mpanda Municipality, the Katavi Regional Police Commander (RPC) Ally Makame said the suspect was arrested on the 1st November, this year at Misunkumilo Street at around 10: 00 pm.
He said the suspect was arrested for illegally obtaining some 5.1m/- for his own gain from eight parents or guardians after tricking and luring them that he would help their eight children to join either TPDF or TISS training camps.
“The suspect lured eight parents or guardians that he would use his influence and power as a TISS officer to help their children to join TPDF and TISS training camps and later they would be recruited,”
explained the RPC.Elaborating Mr Makame said further that the parents of eight children, who alleged to have been conned by the suspect are based at different parts of the country.
It was further alleged that the suspect rented the house for the children in Mpanda Municipality, so that he could continue obtaining money from their parents or guardians illegally.
“The suspect rented the house for them so that he could continue obtaining money from their parents or guardians,”
he said.The RPC said the apprehension of the suspect was made possible following tip off from well-wishers and they acted swiftly.
According to RPC, the suspect will soon be arraigned into court after preliminary investigations of his case are completed.
Meanwhile, Police in Katavi Region have arrested eleven suspects for allegedly engaging in criminal activities in different parts of the region.
According to RPC six of them were caught red handed in illegal possession of homemade fire arms following the latest operations in the region.
According to RPC, the seized illegal homemade firearms are five guns popularly known as `gobore’ and a pistol.
