NIDA Gets Great Boost From South Korea, Majaliwa


South Korean government has provided 310bn/- soft loan to Tanzania for the expansion of the National Identification Authority (NIDA) system and development and maintenance of land information coordination.


The signing of the loan agreements for the two projects between Tanzania and South Korea governments was held on Thursday at the office of the Asian nation’s Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo in Seoul.


The loan which will be released by Korea Exim Bank will be used for the second phase expansion of NIDA identification system worth 161bn/- and the development and maintenance of land information system pegged at 149bn/-.


In his speech note, Premier Kassim Majaliwa said that his country and South Korea are proud of their relations which have lasted for 30 years, adding that, the ties have been a catalyst for economic growth of both countries in various sectors.

“We express our gratitude to the South Korean government for being among the nations, which support our country in addressing various development challenges through Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), he pointed out in the ceremony that was graced by his host, Han Duck-Soo.

He said through their support, Tanzania has managed to construct various infrastructures including bridges, roads, the state- of -the- art ship registration centre in Zanzibar, power transmission line, Mloganzila Medical Centre, Irrigation project in isles and issuance of national identity card.”


Mr Majaliwa further said in addition to the loans provided through the EDCF, Tanzania has also been a beneficiary of grants provided by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), adding:

“We express our gratitude to Korea for making Tanzania a priority country.”


In his address, the Prime Minister narrated how KOICA support to Tanzania in health, technical education and scholarship sectors have helped a lot in speeding up development in the country.


Accompanying the Premier, Finance and Planning Permanent Secretary, Emmanuel Tutuba said that the support in expanding NIDA identification system will help to boost the authority’s capacity to process fast enough more Identity Cards and maintain data storage.

“This loan will help NIDA to focus on rural areas and speed up IDs registration,”
he said.


On land information system, Mr Tutuba said the agreement will help the Ministry of Land, Housing and Human Settlement Development to have a new digital system for keeping information.

“We believe that this new system will address various challenges we have been facing due to lack of proper system for data storage,”
he said.


His entourage also included Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mbarouk Nassor Mbarouk, Tanzania Ambassador to South Korea, Togolani Mavura, Deputy Permanent Secretary, President’s Office Finance and Planning Zanzibar, Aboud Hassan Mwinyi among others.


Mr Majaliwa left the country this week for a working trip to Seoul, South Korea as part of government’s efforts to further strengthen its economic diplomacy.


A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office stated that Mr Majaliwa will be in the Asian country for a three-day official visit, where he will meet with his counterpart, Han Duck-soo.


Similarly, the Premier is also expected to take part in a business conference to be attended by proprietors of major companies and factories and also meet Tanzanians residing in South Korea.
