IN a bid to support the government in the fight against rabies, Education for African Animals Welfare (EAAW) has vaccinated some 5,202 dogs in Mkalama District in Singida Region.
The vaccines were administered to the animals between 2019 and 2022.
Speaking to ‘VIVAX MEDIA’, EAAW’s Executive Director Mr Ayubu Nnko said the move has helped narrow down rabies cases from 30 per cent per month to six cases monthly.
Mr Nnko made the revelation at an event organized to administer vaccine to animals including dogs in the district to mark World Rabies Day 2022.
Every September 28, the world mark Rabies Day. This year’s World Rabies Day is being heralded by the theme ‘One Health, Zero Death.’
Mkalama District Veterinarian Officer Dr Elias Mbwambo thanked the organization for supplement the government’s efforts in the fight against the infectious disease.
“We really appreciate the support by EAAW in elimination of an infectious disease , rabies which is of public health concern for not only Mkalama District but the entire country,”he said.
Dr Mbwambo said rabies is the most fatal disease transmitted between animals and humans calling on the public to take precautions to prevent rabies noting that there is no cure to rabies.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) many humans in Asia and Africa get infected by rabies through dog bites.
The organization underscores the importance of dog vaccination as the most effective intervention against rabies.
