One of the Cyber security expert has warned of the misuse of digital space, saying many social media users were now falling prey to psychological manipulation.
Speaking here earlier this week, Mr Yusuph Kileo observed that a great deal of unsuspecting social media users were making security mistakes or giving away sensitive information to ‘social engineers’.
“Some have ended up losing their valuable assets to such hackers,”
explained Mr Kileo on the sidelines of cyber-security training at the Arusha Technical College (ATC).According to Mr Kileo, cybercriminals use social engineering techniques to conceal their true identity and present themselves as trusted sources or individuals.
He further emphasised on the good use of digital space.
“You should be wary of such individuals as they use very sophisticated means in conning unsuspecting social media users,”
he warned.According to Firewall Times, 98 per cent of cyber-attacks involve social engineering on some level.
Social engineering attacks rely not on hacking computer systems, but on manipulating people.

Earlier on, Public Relation Officer from the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology Ms Faraja Mpina said that the docket was striving to ensure that social media users in Tanzania remain safe and secure.
Ms Mpina noted that the misuse of digital space had very serious consequences in the development of the economy.
“We should all take advantage of good use of digital space as it is full of opportunities,”
she added.Cyber security remains to be one of the key requirements for safe and secure use of the vibrantly used Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), on-line content and social media multiple operations that have become key driver to the peoples, social and economic development not only within the country but also at global level.
Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has been entrusted with the mandate to over-see cyber-security and on-line safety issues through the Tanzania Computer Emergency Response Team abbreviated as TZ-CERT, which is the trusted focal point of contact for coordinating response of cybersecurity incidents at the national level and cooperate with regional and international entities involved with the management of cybersecurity incidents.
