AT least 91 percent of 68 children who had undergone heart screening at the Dodoma-based Benjamin Mkapa Hospital (BMH) in collaboration with the One New Heart Foundation in a one week medical camp for children were found with cardiovascular complications.
Briefing journalists here on Thursday, the Hospital’s Executive Director, Dr Alphonce Chandika, noted that seven children had undergone open heart surgeries and 18 others received other procedures.
“BMH has teamed up with US cardiologists to provide children with free of charge medication for heart complications in one week medical camp at the BMH,”said the Hospital’s boss.
The medical camp, which went hand in hand with marking World Heart Day, which goes under the theme ‘Use Heart for Every Heart,’ is aimed at raising awareness of heart health.

Dr Chandika pointed out that it’s for the fourth time that the BMH partnered with the One New Heart Foundation for the medical camp for children with cardiovascular complications at the BMH.
“This joint medical camp, which kicked off on Monday, will end tomorrow,”he said.
He advised the ‘wananchi’ to cultivate the habit to conduct frequent medical check-ups and do exercises in order to prevent non-communicable diseases.
Ms Specioza Anthony, one of the parents whose child underwent surgery during the medical camp, expressed gratitude to the BMH for conducting a free of charge medical camp.
“I am thankful to the BMH for free of charge surgery which could cost me 7m/-,”said Ms Anthony, whose daughter aged 15 underwent open heart surgery.
Mr Nickson Rwekaza, whose daughter received medication during the medical camp, urged other medical facilities to emulate the BMH for conducting free medical camp.
“I commend BMH for conducting free of charge medical camps, other medical facilities should emulate it,”said the resident of Kagera Region.
