Dry, unmanageable and unconditioned hair
is not a pretty sight and can lead to a lot of problems. Not only does
this hair type lack lustre and shine, but is also prone to hair fall issues. I have come across many people, both men and women, who use everything and just about anything to try and tame their hair in an effort to make them shiny, soft and manageable. If only it was that simple!
There is no doubt whatsoever that
dry hair is genetic, but it could also be the result of unhealthy lifestyle habits, which include food and drinks,
sleeping hours, stress levels and exercise routine, and above all, your
hair care regime. And by this, I do not mean just shampooing your hair.
Hair care means taking care of your hair right from
shampooing and conditioning to oiling it regularly, using the right oil, natural
hair masks,
hair nourishers, tonics and also following a healthy diet. The hair
care regime has to be a part of your weekly, if not bi weekly, routine.
Here are some home remedies to take care of
dry hair -
1. Regular Oiling
I would suggest that those with dry
hair problem
should oil their hair at least twice a week and leave it on for at
least two hours. Not only does it help condition the hair but provides
nourishment as well, making it soft and promoting
hair growth. A good quality Mahabhringraj or Brahmi Amla oil is recommended. Or else a good quality
sesame seed oil mixed with equal quantities of almond and castor oil. Use turban therapy to allow the oil to seep into the roots.
2. Avocado Hair Mask
You can use the following
natural hair mask after oiling your hair, which will nourish it -
1 mashed avocado
2tsp honey
2tsp triphala powder
2 eggs, beaten
Method:
Mix all the ingredients well and apply all over your hair. Cover with a
shower cap for at least 45 minutes. Wash with a mild herbal shampoo.
3. Rose Hair Mask
Rose
petals are known for their incredible properties for both skin and
hair. Combine them with two other power ingredients - almond oil and
eggs, and they can work wonders. Use -
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup fresh rose petal paste
4 tsp almond oil
Method:
Mix all the ingredients together and apply all over the hair and scalp
and leave in for about 45 minutes. Wash with a mild shampoo.
4. Natural Hair Rinse
If you are among those who don't have the time for carrying out elaborate hair care regimes, why not make some
natural hair rinses to use after shampooing and
conditioning? Here's how -
Take 200ml distilled water or spring water and add 2 tsp honey. Use this as an after shampoo rinse.
You
can also boil 10 Marigold flowers in 1 litre of water. Let this steep
for 1 hour and add 1 tsp olive oil. Strain and use as an after shampoo
rinse for your hair. Not only will your hair feel softer but more
manageable as well.
5. Flowery and Fruity Hair Pack
Flower and
fruit extracts
have always had a special place in my treasure trove of beauty recipes,
both for the skin and hair. This recipe is a real treat. I use it
regularly and also have shared it with some of my Bollywood clients
whose hair goes through a lot of turmoil and stress with the constant
drying and hairstyling.
1 cup marigold and rose paste
10 hibiscus flower paste
10 hibiscus leaves
5 bay leaves
1 mashed banana
4 tsb olive oil
1 egg
1 tsp ghee or clarified butter
Method:
Mix all the ingredients well and apply on your hair. Leave in for 1
hour with a shower cap and then steam your hair. This will help the
ingredients soak into the roots and strengthen them. Shampoo after 1
hour.
With
all these wonderful natural recipes your hair will gradually transform
from dry and stressed to soft and smooth. Imbibe them into your daily
lifestyle and see the magic in your tresses.
